The Disability Tax Credit in Ontario

Two different things get confused here, and they work in opposite directions. One is Ontario's own disability program. The other is the provincial part of the tax credit itself.

1. Ontario's own disability program is separate

Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). Money to help you and your eligible family members with living expenses, plus health benefits including prescription drugs and vision care.

Official Ontario program page

We found no government statement linking the two. We searched Ontario's program, eligibility and application pages and found nothing saying DTC approval is required for it, or that it grants it. That is what we found, not a guarantee that no connection exists anywhere. Check with Ontario directly before relying on it.

ODSP uses its own statutory test under the Ontario Disability Support Program Act, decided through its Disability Determination Package. Ontario has published that receiving the federal Canada Disability Benefit will not affect ODSP eligibility or payment amount.

The CRA rebuts the reverse belief explicitly. Being on a provincial disability program does not make you eligible for the DTC. The CRA writes: "Eligibility is not impacted by the receipt of other federal or provincial benefits... it does not necessarily mean you are eligible for the DTC. These programs have other purposes and different criteria, such as an individual's inability to work."

2. The provincial tax amount is automatic

You do not apply for this separately, and most people do not realise it. The CRA states that once your application is approved it will automatically adjust your tax returns for all applicable years, including the federal and provincial disability amounts.

One federal application. No provincial form.

For the 2025 tax year, Ontario's disability amount is $10,298, on top of the federal $10,138.

Do not compare that number with another province's. Each jurisdiction multiplies its amount by its own lowest tax rate, and those rates differ. A larger base amount in one province is not proportionally more valuable than a smaller one in another. It is also an amount claimed, not cash received. How the amounts actually work.

What this means for your application

The application is federal, and it is the same everywhere: you complete Part A, your medical practitioner completes Part B. How to apply. Where you live changes what the approval is worth, not how you get it.
