The Disability Tax Credit in Yukon

Two different things get confused here, and they work in opposite directions. One is Yukon's own disability program. The other is the provincial part of the tax credit itself.

1. Yukon's own disability program is separate

Yukon Social Assistance, with the Yukon Supplementary Allowance (YSA). Last-resort financial help for basic needs.

Official Yukon program page

There is a documented connection here. Yukon lists the Disability Tax Credit under what is not counted as income for Social Assistance, so receiving it does not reduce your assistance. It is not an eligibility requirement.

Yukon is the only jurisdiction that does not set its own figure. Its Form 428 line reads "Disability amount for self (amount from line 31600 of your return)", so the territorial amount equals the federal amount by direct reference.

The CRA rebuts the reverse belief explicitly. Being on a provincial disability program does not make you eligible for the DTC. The CRA writes: "Eligibility is not impacted by the receipt of other federal or provincial benefits... it does not necessarily mean you are eligible for the DTC. These programs have other purposes and different criteria, such as an individual's inability to work."

2. The provincial tax amount is automatic

You do not apply for this separately, and most people do not realise it. The CRA states that once your application is approved it will automatically adjust your tax returns for all applicable years, including the federal and provincial disability amounts.

One federal application. No provincial form.

Yukon does not set its own figure. Its form points directly at the federal line, so the territorial amount equals the federal $10,138.

Do not compare that number with another province's. Each jurisdiction multiplies its amount by its own lowest tax rate, and those rates differ. A larger base amount in one province is not proportionally more valuable than a smaller one in another. It is also an amount claimed, not cash received. How the amounts actually work.

What this means for your application

The application is federal, and it is the same everywhere: you complete Part A, your medical practitioner completes Part B. How to apply. Where you live changes what the approval is worth, not how you get it.
